2010 Lohri Festival in India

“Lohri” if any one does not know, is a festival of the people who are the backbone of the country, i.e., Farmers. Its actually the celebration of their first yield of their harvesting season. This season is grandly celebrated in the northern part of the country especially in Punjab. It is a festival which dissolves the differences cross Indo-Pak border.

The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel celebrated the ‘Lohri’ festival at the India-Pakistan border in Jammu. The BSF personnel got together to celebrate the festival with fanfare and gaiety as sounds of laughter could be heard from the Octroi Border Out Post (BOP) of Suchetgarh sector in Jammu district.

The Lohri is celebrated with fervour and gaiety so that troops, who cannot go home during the festival, do not miss their families. “We are celebrating this festival here with great enthusiasm for our soldiers, who are like our children. We want that they should not miss their homes and families,” said Akram Khan, Deputy Commandant of BSF.

Himachal Pradesh Governor Prabha Rau and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today greeted the people of the State on the occasion of ‘Lohri.

Ms Rao stressed that ”the festival provides an opportunity to share happiness with our near and dear ones and also helps in strengthening the bonds of brotherhood”. Mr Dhumal said such festivals also bring happiness and prosperity in the lives of people. Union Steel Minister Virbhadra Singh also greeted the people of the state on the asuspcious occasion.

President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday greeted the nation on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Lohri and Pongal.

In her message, the president said: “On the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti and Pongal, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all my fellow citizens.”

“Makar Sankranti and Pongal are expressions of the emotional unity that is India’s strength. These are days of great festivity and rejoicing,” she added.

“May these festivals bind each one of us in fraternal love and affection and inspire us to work for the unity, progress and well being of our nation,” she said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the nation and said these “festivals celebrate fresh harvest and emphasize the importance of sharing in our lives”.

“They mark the beginning of an auspicious period of the year. May the festivals bring prosperity, happiness and joy for all,” he said.
